Any breeder wishing to be registered with the Breed Information Service must agree with and sign the Code of Ethics. Written complaints against a breeder will be referred to the Breed Information Service Committee. The breeder involved will be asked to appear before the Committee and on completion of the investigation, the Committee will make recommendations to the Executive of the Edmonton Kennel Club for further action. This action could result in rejection of the complaint, or the removal of the breeder from the Service, and/or expulsion from the Edmonton Kennel Club.

As an ethical breeder I hereby undertake to:

• Breed only healthy adult dogs (over 12 months) of sound temperament, without any known genetic faults or breed disqualifications. My objective in breeding is to continually strive to meet the written standard for my breed, and before breeding to arrange the placement of the resulting puppies in good homes.

• Keep my dogs under sanitary conditions and give them maximum health protection.

• Have all stock registered with the Canadian Kennel Club and maintain accurate records of matings, pedigrees and sales.

• Not sell or consign dogs to pet stores or commercial dealers nor supply dogs for raffles, giveaway prizes, etc. I will not be involved in leases, sales or stud services unless confident the animals and resulting progeny will be given proper care and attention.

• As an ethical breeder, provide purchasers with written details as to the care, feeding and welfare of the dog before it leaves my premises. Conditions of sale (non-breeding papers, co-ownership or outright sale) will be in writing and completed and signed by all parties before the dog leaves my premises.

• Provide information and referrals to other ethical breeders if I do not have puppies available.

• By signing this Code of Ethics I have agreed to the conditions outlined above. I will answer all enquiries to the best of my ability and I will not make detrimental statements about other breeders, their dogs, or their breeding practices. I will conduct my breeding and selling practices in a courteous, friendly and business-like manner to preserve the good name of ethical breeders and the Edmonton Kennel Club.
